TN sheriff’s office warning residents of cryptocurrency scam

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Maury County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public about a scam involving cryptocurrency.

MCSD reports that scammers are calling and demanding cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is irreversible making the stolen funds harder to recover.

Red flags to watch out for:

  • A caller claims your computer has a virus and demands crypto for repairs.
  • You’re told you’ve won a prize but must send crypto to claim it.
  • Someone threatens to release compromising information unless you send crypto.
  • An online relationship partner you’ve never met asks for crypto.
  • Promises of huge investment returns in crypto.
  • A supposed government or law enforcement official demands crypto for a fine, warrant, or bail.
  • A stranger instructs you on where to send crypto.

The sheriff’s office said that if something feels off, end the call immediately.
